- Local & renewable energy production

Jokkmokk municipality has about 5000 inhabitants and is situated at the Arctic Circle in the inner parts of Norrbotten, Sweden. Jokkmokk is a Swedish Eco-municipality and a signatory of the Covenant of Mayors, the world's largest movement for local climate and energy actions. Within the borders of Jokkmokk, about 13 TWh of hydro power are produced. The municipal district heating plant is based on locally produced biomass and a comprehensive energy performance contracting project for municipal buildings has been implemented. Jokkmokk is collaborating with three other municipalities and is providing free of cost energy advice for SME, households and organisations. With an area of about 20 000 km2 and about 50% of protected nature (World Heritage Laponia / national parks) tourism and reindeer herding are two important branches which are affected by climate change significantly. There are several small-scale companies in the field of food and food processing with development potential.
Jokkmokk has been partner in several EU projects, among others Intelligent Energy Europe projects. In the last years, Jokkmokk has under the Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) project RECENT developed several feasibility studies on new local energy actions and is going beyond that in an ongoing NPA project LECO, in which we are working with 5 pilot communities for making them more energy self-sufficient based on a grassroot approach. There are several sources for waste heat which is not used yet. New possible fields of business are energy intense industries (due to the high amount of hydro power) like server halls and even land-based fishery.
Any EU region or municipality engaged in an EU project in any of the fields listed above.
