Invitation: AI Tools in Local Governments: Using AI Responsibly for Resilient Communities
Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in the public sector. Today, algorithmic systems can influence or determine decisions such as school placements, access to healthcare, and eligibility for social benefits.
Used appropriately, AI has the potential to improve efficiency, strengthen public services, and increase accessibility for citizens. At the same time, it raises important questions related to accountability, transparency, and resilience in public administration.
This seminar brings together practitioners, policymakers, and researchers to discuss how local governments—particularly smaller and mid-sized municipalities—can develop and implement AI solutions responsibly. It will also explore how European policy frameworks, including EU AI initiatives, can support this work.
Amongst other contributions, the seminar will feature Marcus Matteby, Executive Postdoc in Digital Transformation and Public Sector Innovation and Chief Digital Officer in the municipalities of Sundsvall and Ånge, who will share experiences from developing AI tools in smaller municipalities and discuss opportunities and challenges for local governments seeking to build their own AI capabilities.
Participants will also hear from Maja Fjaestad, Associate Professor in History of Technology, affiliated researcher at the Institute for Futures Studies and expert coordinator at Karolinska Institutet, who will address the role of AI in public-sector decision-making and explore the broader implications of algorithmic systems for governance, accountability, and democratic institutions.
Additional speakers and discussion points will be announced closer to the event. Together, the programme will provide practical insights and strategic perspectives on how municipalities can make effective and responsible use of AI while navigating evolving national and European policy frameworks.
