Background to the study

The case study of Västerbotten and Norrbotten is the second report to be launched within the international project “OECD Mining Regions and Cities”. Upper-Norrland (Västerbotten and Norrbotten) is one of Europe’s most important mining region and produces 90 % of the iron ore used in the EU. A substantial part of Europe’s assets for critical minerals and metals needed for the green transition can be found in Upper-Norrland, and the region has great potential to become a global leading region for sustainable mining.
